Varieties of Trap Music

Writer's picture: Kimberly LumKimberly Lum

It would be difficult to discuss different types of trap music without first finding a standard version of trap. This is actually harder than it sounds, since trap itself is a variation of hip hop music. There are also different styles within trap, the main two being the earlier Atlanta-based trap music like Gucci Mane's Trap House (2005) and Childish Gambino's This is America (2018), and the more recent trap EDM with the most notable songs beings Baauer's Harlem Shake (2012) and DJ Snake and Lil John's Turn Down for What (2013). However, it is also common to conflate the two, which is what I'll be doing for my standard definition, although I'll be sticking closer to the Atlanta variant, as many of the variants are also common crossover genres of EDM.

Drill is a variant of trap that originated in the South Side of Chicago, characterized by darker subject matter, heavy auto-tune, and a slower tempo. Notable songs include Chief Keefe's Love Sosa (2012) and I Don't Like (2012).

Latin trap, originating from Puerto Rico, draws influences from reggaetón and Latin hip hop. While originating in Puerto Rico, the genre's popularity has spread throughout Central and South America with notable artists such as Bad Bunny and De La Ghetto.

Trap metal, which goes by many different names including scream trap, industrial trap, and hardcore trap, is a subgenre which blends influences from metal, emo rap, and punk music and ascetics. It's characterized by screamo vocals and down-tuned guitars.
