At some point, we have all watched this movie and possibly watched it more than once. The iconic 1975 thriller film—Jaws—directed by Steven Spielberg depicts scenes of a shark attack in a New England town and efforts to capture the killer shark. In addition, the film is known for its engaging theme song composed by John Williams. Williams earned an Academy Award for the film’s score and later ranked the sixth-greatest score by the American Film Institute. Furthermore, the shark theme simply alternates between two notes E and F or sometimes F and F sharp (Wikipedia). The theme consists of repetitive bass notes, in which John Williams explains were meant to represent the shark as an "unstoppable force" of "mindless and instinctive attacks” (Wikipedia). Other music scholars suggest that the theme song represents the shark’s heartbeat, and others say it represents human respiration. All in all, the score engages viewers by keeping them on their toes with loud repetitive bass notes. Also, Steven Spielberg admits that without Williams’ score, the film would not be as successful as it is. Hence, the theme song is necessary to make Jaws scenes memorable and thrilling.
