The Violin...Rocks

Francesca Cosmo

The violin is a key member of the orchestra, but it is also a key member of an alternative rock band called Yellowcard. Yes, you read that right. Yellowcard was formed in 1997, and remained active until 2017. They gained some popularity in their scene in the early 2000's, and have remained distinctive within their genre because of their consistent use of the violin.

This song, For You And Your Denial, begins with a violin solo. This brief introduction sets the tone for the rest of the song, calm on the surface with some aggressive undertones. The violin in featured throughout the rest of the song in addition to basic rock instruments, such as the electric guitar and a drum set.

Yellowcard can contribute much of their success to their ability to include such a classical instrument in such a not-classical setting, and make it sound like that's exactly where it belongs. In a time were multiple bands were emerging in their genre, they stood out and were easily recognized, because not many rock bands include a violin...but this one did.
