Chords You Will Want To Hear Again!

Alyssa Mathew

When thinking about the end of senior year in high school, one of the most memorable moments was when my friends and I showcased a cover of Tyler the Creator’s “See You Again” ft. Kali Uchis for our chorus. The four of us each had a different role in putting our ensemble together: I rapped and sang melody while one of my friends harmonized and played the guitar, another shook an egg shaker and scatted softly in the background, and the other played the piano chords to the song. The chords played were so distinct, that when discussing chord progressions in class, I immediately thought of this song as an example of a song that carried a pattern of repeating chords. The song is written in the key of F#maj and follows the chord progression of Gbmaj7(F#maj7)-Ebm7(D#m7)-Abm7-G7. The unconventional chord pattern helps to create a somber yet calming tone that introduces the genre of R&B into the beginning before it breaks down into a more hip-hop rap piece. In the original song the chord progression does change during the rap section, but generally, when played on the piano, the chords stay the same and it doesn't change the authenticity or

movement of the music. In my opinion the chord progression is a pivotal part of what makes this song so memorable and iconic.
