America's Sweetheart?

Daniella Valentino

Would you find it crazy if I told you that America's newest sweetheart is not American? Maybe so. However, that is what Lewis Capaldi has decided to name himself since his recent single, Someone You Loved, hit No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart (Wikipedia). Lewis Capaldi is, in fact, not American, but a Scottish singer-songwriter (Wikipedia). Capaldi often satirizes pop culture on social media and has made it very clear to the general public of how little he cares about looks and reputation. Thus, he ironically named himself America's Sweetheart, because he clearly doesn't care for anything America's pop culture promotes.

Someone You Loved is Capaldi's first No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the breakdown of the song is very telling as to how it made it there. The song itself follows a basic melody, using the piano as the main instrument, with a chord progression of C#, G#, A#m, and F# (myChorDBook). This chord progression is played throughout the song, and matches Capaldi's solemn lyrics of lost love and the strangled tone of voice that conveys clear distress and heartbreak. The chord progression, to me, almost sounds like a lullaby, a lullaby that tells of the same heartbreak that we all feel at some point or another in our lives. Who knew that America's Satirical Sweetheart could capture the attention of millions?
