The french horn usually played in orchestras has been slightly used in different genres, but one certain genre stuck out to me that I thought wouldn't have had a french horn playing. Soft rock!!! I couldn't imagine a soft rock song with a french horn playing, until I heard one song, one song that changed it all...
Neil Diamond, a soft rock legend, released "Solitary Man" in 1966 which featured a french horn. It added a certain vibe and feeling throughout the song that no other instrument playing could. The sound it added was different from the rest of the instruments, and yet so perfectly played and incorporated into the song. The winsome french horn strangely gives a joyful and hopeful addition to a sad song about betrayal in relationships.
Who would have thought, soft rock could feature a french horn in such a beautiful way?
