The 808 Bass is a key element in trap music. In the literal sense, the term "808" is referring to an electronic drum machine, the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, which was created in 1980 and quite popular in hip hop music in the 1980s. One of its most distinctive features is the dribbling bass drum sound. Other notable features are the triplet hi hats, the kicks, and the snares. The iconic machine's sounds are a staple to trap music, although they can now be more easily achieved through copycat programs and devices.
The TR-808 was never intended to be such a staple in hip hop music or any genre for that matter. It was intended to help rock band record demos when a drummer was not physically present to record.
An interesting fact about the term 808 Bass is it is also penal code for "disturbing the peace." Hip hop music when it first began was considered by many to do just that- disturb the peace. In addition, police could be called if a neighbor is playing music too loudly, including the 808 bass sounds. This would fall under penal code 808.
